In a previous episode, we managed to restore the screen-left shoulder completely. However, we still had work to do on the hair…

Let’s start with the first five frames. The problem is obvious: the wire sits right behind the hair, which makes it especially difficult to clean. Thankfully, the nodes we’ve learned along the way come in handy here.

In the video below, you can see how we pull a detailed alpha matte using a keyer and a colourspace node. From there, we add extra support depending on the frame, such as:

🔹 RotoPaint: drawing back missing hair details, especially the very thin strands.

🔹 Clean plate (Frame 1): using information from a specific area to patch missing sections.

🔹 Blur and colour tweaks: matching the softness and colour tone of the hair in the plate.

Even though it’s only five frames and a small section, this hair restoration requires a surprising amount of work, and it’s absolutely worth it. This is the kind of detail that catches a supervisor’s eye and sells the illusion to the audience.

Nonetheless, we’re only just getting started with the hair. There are still more strands that need to be addressed.

But that will be for a future episode.

The journey continues...
