Yes, it is not an easy task. That is why we are starting only with the hair, using a 10-frame test to see whether the approach works.

Lighting time!

Maybe the most noticeable element in this shot is the fact that a fire element is moving with the character.

And that fire generates light.

Light that illuminates different parts of the character’s body, as well as the environment and the other characters in the scene.

That is what we call, in compositing, interactive lighting.

In theory, it is not too complicated.

As we can see in the video below, it is a matter of designing roto masks in the areas where the light would hit the character, then applying the right colour correction to match the intensity and colour tone of the fire.

So, where is the problem?

Well… maybe the fact that those masks move.

And the shot is around 180 frames long.

Yes, it is not an easy task. That is why we are starting only with the hair, using a 10-frame test to see whether the approach works.

Apparently, we are on the right path, but we still need to see how the final result will look.

But that will be for a future episode.
