Even more importantly, we can check whether there’s still room for improvement, and whether we’re respecting the look and intention of the original plate.
The Kronos plate feels much more fluid in its movement, while the Retime version, especially in the arms, feels slightly snappy and less natural.
To begin with, when a bullet hits a metallic surface, it creates sparks due to the heat and impact. However, there’s another secondary effect: residual smoke.
For starters, it analyses the motion in the footage to generate its own motion vectors, which already gives us a much cleaner result than the standard Retime node.
When bullets hit, the friction between the hot metal and the cold surface generates sparks at the point of impact. They’re brief, but they’re essential proof that the elements in the shot are really interacting, and they have to be there.
For everyone else, retiming is simply the act of changing the original duration of footage, either by increasing or decreasing its speed.
