You might think that NDA stands for something VFX-related…

And, in a way, it does.

Let me explain.

NDA stands for Non-Disclosure Agreement.

It is a legal document that, in simple terms, prevents you from revealing confidential information about the company or the projects you are working on.

It may sound like something reserved for top-secret industries, such as military defence, medical research, cybersecurity…

And movie studios.

That’s right!

If you ever get hired to work on a project for a VFX or animation studio, you will likely need to sign an NDA as part of your onboarding process.

How strict can these documents be?

Very strict.

You need to agree not to reveal details about the project you are working on.

Why?

Because the project belongs to the client. They decide when it will be released, how it will be announced, and when the secrets of their story can finally be shared.

If one of those secrets gets leaked, the consequences can be serious.

And losing your job might be the least of your concerns.

A betrayal of trust can become poisonous in any industry, and VFX is no exception.

So, next time you feel tempted to run your mouth, remember the GIF below…

Just one small word, and you might remember what could happen if you finish that sentence.

However, there are other aspects of NDAs you may need to know.

But that will be for a future episode.

So, stay tuned!

The journey continues...
