In the last episode, we agreed that picking plates similar to the work your target studios handle is a solid first step. But that strategy needs a second factor: presentation.

Too often, great plates with flawless technical and artistic execution get overlooked because the artist doesn’t showcase them properly. Usually we associate the breakdown of a shot with a simple before-and-after wipe and call it a day. That might work for a quick social post, but in a job application or interview the bar is way higher.

What do recruiters and supervisors expect in a breakdown?

➡️ Show what you actually did: walk viewers from the raw plate to the final comp, highlighting each major step.

➡️ Visual proof of process: layer reveals, focalized wipes, or side‑by‑sides that demonstrate how you integrated CG, painted out rigs, or matched lighting.

➡️ Demonstrate tool mastery: clear breakdowns tell reviewers you’re not just pressing buttons. You understand the software and the workflow, but most importantly: how to solve problems.

If you’re unsure how to structure a breakdown, study reference reels from studios that inspire you. Watch how they visualize their work and adapt those techniques to your own shots. You’ll soon see you can build a polished breakdown yourself.

But once the breakdown is finished, what comes next?

Well… that’s for another episode.

The journey continues…
