New project, new challenges. But everything starts with a concept and the answer every artist must made: Why am I changing this and with what purpose?

First, the concept: we replace the posters for another band from a famous movie to set up the scene in that fictional universe. In this case, the chosen one was with Sex Bob-omb from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

The purpose? It sets the scene in a fictional universe where the character might be heading to her favorite underground show.

Why this band? The vibe and atmosphere of the subterranean bar ties in perfectly with one where the band would play. Additionally, the posters on the wall match perfectly with Sex Bob-omb’s graphic design of their promotional material and one of their posters even hints that the action is happening in Toronto.

Next comes integration. We’re focusing on color, defocus, and motion-blur matching while we use a temporary track for the shot.

Why tackle those first? Because getting color and blur correct early on makes a bigger impact on believability than wrestling with final tracking right away. That’s not to say tracking isn’t challenging; the camera movement alone is enough to keep us on our toes, but color and blur fidelity can make or break the illusion much faster.

Now comes a new phase of the integration process: Recreating the original poster’s material and lighting details so it truly belongs in the scene. If it doesn’t share the same lighting key as the original poster, the replacement will stand out for all the wrong reasons.

So…Stay tuned!

The journey continues…
