ENDA was in the middle of a paint out shot when suddenly —BOOM!— The Mask appeared, doing his iconic Cuban Pete dance. And guess what? He demanded to be rotoscoped.

Yes, a second project on the desk before the first one is even wrapped up. Welcome to the industry's work rhythm, where juggling multiple shots and unwavering deadlines is just part of the routine.

Except… that ENDA chose this plate willingly. Why?

Well, besides that is the beginning of one of my favorite scenes in the movie. It always surprises me how well the character dances in such a ridiculous way, but being charming and funny at the same time. Not caring that he is surrounded by a SWAT team.

As for the challenges?

➡️ First, there’s a moment where The Mask seems to be standing still, “seems” until subtle movements become glaringly obvious.

➡️ Then he bursts into full dance mode, introducing motion blur all over, with no part of his body ever truly idle.

➡️ The camera angle and lens choice also create an appealing perspective for viewers, but a tricky one for roto artists: every shift in depth and distortion needs careful handling.

The Good news?

He is using a hat and even without it, there is no hair to rotoscope... Until ENDA remembers that he still has to rotoscope the hair details in the Barbie shot.

Everything balanced as it should be.....

Still, this complex project offers a chance to refine techniques for slow and rapid motion, manage motion blur reconstruction, and of course, the chance to experiment with many new machine learning tools I'll be sharing.... in future posts.

So… stay tuned!

The journey continues…
