During my 5 years of career, I had to pass 5 Journalism courses: 1 of Fundamentals, 2 of TV Journalism, 1 of Radio, and 1 of Literary Analysis.

It might sound like they were useless for someone who wanted to do Film and at that time: be a script writer or a postproducer later on.

Nonetheless, reality proved to be completely different:

✅ TV Journalism: taught me how to shoot directly on the field and handle fast-paced productions that could change at any time. It also showed me how important is to have and maintain contacts in the industry.

By the time I had to take the Documentary course, I already had a good base of knowledge about working in the field and how to do an investigation.

✅ Radio: it helped me improve my oral expression and gain more confidence. It also taught me how to project and control the tone of my voice in order to transmit the message I want to convey.

Also, the importance of not being afraid of a microphone and by extension, losing fear to talking in public. Something that helped me a lot when I was looking for sponsors for our graduation short film project.

✅ Literary Analysis: taught me how to dissect any kind of text and see deeper than what the words mean, but how they are used and why they are t used.

Thanks to this, the next academic projects were far easier because I now had better tools to comprehend the texts better. Even today, I use some of these principles when I analyze films or TV series.

✅ Fundamentals: this is maybe the one that integrated deeper into my mindset: the principles of Journalism.

In short: always verify what you find or are told and be conscious of how much you can influence others with a message.

I can not enumerate all the times this has saved me from serious misunderstandings and become more conscious of how information should be shared and transmitted to another group of people.

However, the question remains: “How did all this help arrive in the New World?”

Well, that would be for a next episode.

The journey continues…
