Maybe it was because of my schooling or my square head, but for a while, I did not understand the real meaning of “taking notes”.

I spent much of the time thinking that I could just transcript extracts of what I heard during a class and it worked, for a while.

But then, in college things got even more complicated, the class turned into lectures and now I had to keep up with a very fast-paced rhythm: if I wrote for too long, I would miss part of the explanation. If I listened the whole time, I would not have remembered much without the notes.

Hence I had to adapt:

➡️I had to find ways to synthesize much information in no more than 2 or 3 phrases per note.

➡️I had to start writing questions in the same notes to ponder or to consult in the same class.

➡️I had to learn how to “listen” better. Not just hear what they are explaining, but think about it and develop it through questions.

And with a lot of practice and time, I could take real notes, notes that were not a copy-paste of what I heard, but of what I learned.

One would think that this applies to a school or academic setting, but the truth is taking notes is something essential in this industry.

How? Well, that would be for another episode.

The journey continues…
