In the video below, you’ll see that even with the same VectorBlur settings, the motion-blur result changes subtly, but in a meaningful way.
First, the flow vectors already produce a pleasing motion blur with the current values for Motion Amount and Motion Falloff. In contrast, the Smart Vectors don’t reach the same level of blur using those same settings.
Now, that doesn’t mean we can’t raise the values and achieve something similar. We absolutely can.
But it does suggest that flow vectors carry a stronger data range, which allows them to deliver a solid result without pushing VectorBlur too aggressively.
In the end, both approaches can produce good results, and each has its place.
If you want the most precise outcome, flow vectors are the stronger option. But if you don’t have NNFlowVector installed, Nuke’s default SmartVectors node can still give you a very respectable result.
So… is this the end of the NNFlowVector arc?
Maybe yes… maybe no.
