ENDA Episode 222 → The time when ENDA tells a little secret called: NNFlowVector (Part 2)
But here’s the catch: NNFlowVector isn’t listed as a preset. So we do what compositors do best: test.
In a previous episode, we showed how NNFlowVector can generate motion vectors using only a live-action plate — but one question remained:
“How good are they for motion blur?”
In the video below, the first step is straightforward: we shuffle in the motion-vector channels: forward and backward.
Then we bring in a familiar ally: VectorBlur. Some of its controls are already known, but two settings matter the most here: UV Channels and MV Presets.
🔹UV Channels lets us choose which vector pass will drive the blur direction. After a quick comparison, we found that the backward channel gave the cleaner, more pleasant result.
🔹MV Presets tells VectorBlur how to interpret the motion vectors based on different renderer formats. That’s handy when vectors come from an FX team and we know the renderer used.
But here’s the catch: NNFlowVector isn’t listed as a preset.
So we do what compositors do best: test.
We try each preset until we find the one that behaves the most accurately, and in this case, PRMan won the round. With a few more tweaks, we were ready to test it in motion.
After checking the motion blur across the sequence, we can confirm that the results are surprisingly solid, good enough to hold up for more detailed work.
But one question still remains:
How different is this from using Smart Vectors?
