It’s repo time!

Or… why it’s important to fix the animation coming from an FX render.

A common belief is that once we receive an FX render, we don’t need to worry about tracking or alignment. But things aren’t always perfect.

Sometimes the simulation works, but at the cost of drifting or misaligning with the plate’s motion. And when that happens, it’s on us to fix it. Once again, the tools we’ve used in previous projects come in handy.

Using an OCIOColourSpace node sandwich, we can preserve the detail of the render while correcting placement errors in the simulation. In this case, the misalignments happen only in certain frame ranges, and some are so subtle you might miss them at first glance.

However, that subtlety (and the fact that the drift isn’t consistent) makes it difficult to solve with a clean track. So we’re left with the less glamorous option: manual animation fixes. It’s a bit tedious, but the final result is far more convincing.

Now that the motion is correct, we can focus on what comes next: Motion Blur.

But that will be for a future episode.

So, stay tuned!

The journey continues...
