In a previous episode, we mentioned that Segment Anything could help with rotoscoping tasks, but it has both upsides and downsides.
This part is about the first: the upside.
In the video below, you can see how the node can generate its own Cryptomatte-style outputs, allowing us to separate the character from the background. With those masks, it becomes much easier to grade a specific area if needed, whether it’s to adjust exposure, colour, or even just isolate a detail for further work.
It almost sounds like a dream…
And that’s exactly where the downsides begin.
Up to this point, we’ve been testing it on the assumption that we’re not dealing with major movement or heavy motion blur. And studio shots are not like that.
But that will be for a future episode.
