“Living on the high wire” is not just an expression; it’s often what it feels like when you’re producing something. Or at least, that’s how it felt every time I embarked on a new project.

One of the most intense experiences was producing a TV show with puppets.

I’ve already talked about the process of creating the puppets in a previous part, but today it’s all about one thing: time, that resource which seems to slip away faster the closer you get to the deadline.

This project was no exception.

We had tight deadlines to finish the puppets, very little time to build the background, limited rehearsals, and an extremely packed shoot day.

And things didn’t end when the cameras stopped rolling. Post-production was even more demanding. Half of the team was editing the different segments, while the other half was handling motion graphics, graphic design, sound effects, and whatever else the production needed.

It got to the point where we had to do all the audio mixing directly in the editing software, because there was no time to send it to Pro Tools. Even then, we finished rendering the programme only a few hours before the final presentation.

The curious thing? The programme was a success.

And looking back at how much it cost, around 390 USD for the entire pilot, it feels almost unreal. Despite the pressure, the time constraints, and the imperfections, it was a very well-managed project.

Would I do it again? Probably not. But the lessons I learned about how to handle fast-paced environments have stayed with me to this day.

The journey continues...
