They were actually 10 different pieces of footage.
As the breakdown shows, it wasn’t just a matter of scaling them and setting the screen blend mode.
Smoke is one of the hardest things to manage in comp, especially if it’s footage. The density it’s not the same everywhere; their colour is easily affected by the light and environment, their original shapes don’t usually fit the plate, so you have to mask out many parts of it, etc.
As you can see in the video below, each time we drop a new smoke/fog footage, it has to pass an integration treatment, and the final result is not always flashy.
