In the previous episode, we asked the question:

“Can I earn a lot of money from this?”

And yes, there is an answer, but it’s not as simple as we might think.

In fact, it has more colours and tones than a rainbow.

Let’s start with a path that is often more direct when aiming for a higher wage: production.

Production may not involve artistic or technical work directly, but it’s the department that oversees the entire project and communicates with clients. And yes, a well-established producer can earn a very high salary.

But it comes with a price: time.

Speaking from experience, production will always demand far more of your time than most technical or artistic roles.

Why?

Because you’re responsible for the project, and emergencies can happen at any time, on any day. It’s a role that carries heavy responsibility and requires serious commitment.

But if you genuinely enjoy that position, then you can accept that price and eventually earn a higher wage.

Another path is reaching the highest position available within your craft.

For example:

🔹Modellers, texture artists, and riggers may aim to become CG Supervisors.

🔹Animators may eventually become Directors.

🔹FX TDs, lighters, and compositors may move towards becoming VFX Supervisors.

However, here comes the reality check:

Not everyone becomes a supervisor or a director, and sometimes, that’s by choice.

Many artists are perfectly happy remaining Seniors.

Some because they enjoy being hands-on artists.

Some because they don’t want to lead a team.

Others simply prefer to keep things simple.

And that might be your case, or it might not.

I mention this not to discourage you, but to show that there are many different paths, and artists choose them for different reasons.

So, if your goal is to become a supervisor or director purely for the higher pay, there’s nothing wrong with that. Just keep in mind that earning those positions requires a lot of work, consistent growth in your craft, and proof that you deserve to keep climbing.

Once again, the price is time, and a great deal of commitment.

And I’ll stop here, because as I said earlier, this answer comes in many colours. The rest is something you’ll discover as you gain more experience yourself.

The journey continues...
