ENDA Episode 154 → The time when ENDA talks about learning Compositing (Part 1)
There are hundreds of free tutorials, paid courses, online diplomas, all claiming to teach you "Compositing." But then comes the next question: Which one is right for me?
I’ve written a lot about my journey so far, but I never really stopped to ask:
What does it actually mean to learn Compositing?
When I started, and probably like many others, I didn’t even know that was the name.
We called it different things: VFX, special effects, post-production, little movie tricks...
We just wanted to alter images and make them look cool. Like in the movies.
Maybe the dream of every artist.
But the path to actually becoming a compositor? That’s where it gets confusing.
Depending on where you were born, you might not even find an official Compositing course in your country. You might have to settle for generalist schools or university programs in Art, Communication, or Computer Science and hope they point you in the right direction.
And yes, I know…There’s YouTube.
There are hundreds of free tutorials, paid courses, online diplomas, all claiming to teach you "Compositing."
But then comes the next question:
Which one is right for me?
And that’s if your first language is English.
If it’s not?
You’ll probably have to learn it and fast, because most of the best resources are in English.
Another challenge to overcome.
In the end, it feels like the journey to Compositing is already difficult... before even learning what it is.
It's almost like we need to learn how to learn Compositing.
Confusing? Let me simplify:
Before you even start learning what Compositing is,
you first need to:
🧭 Discover this career path even exists
🏫 Find where you can learn it
🧪 Filter through all the noise and options
📅 Figure out when is the best time to dive in
💡 And most importantly, understand why it has to be Compositing.
Only then can you finally begin the actual journey.
And once you do… that’s when you realize:
Now you have to learn (again) what it means to learn Compositing… and "learn" Compositing.
The journey continues…
