ENDA Episode 153 → The time when ENDA fights with a fire sword (Part 1)

This time, we’ve jumped into Scott Pilgrim’s world. The scene? A battle where Scott fights off Gideon’s lackeys using a fire sword while flipping through the air. Naturally, the sword wasn’t lit during shooting, but it needs to be on fire in the final shot.

I know, I know… here we go again.

I was just trying to survive the John Wick gunfight and escape that lair, only to be thrown into a whole new challenge from a completely different movie:

“Would you also like to comp a fire sword?”

A sane person would’ve said no.

But ENDA doesn’t back down. And yes… I probably lost a few screws after comping one too many muzzle flashes.

This time, we’ve jumped into Scott Pilgrim’s world. The scene? A battle where Scott fights off Gideon’s lackeys using a fire sword while flipping through the air. Naturally, the sword wasn’t lit during shooting, but it needs to be on fire in the final shot.

Luckily, we got the FX render from the FX department. And now is the part where I tell you: “It’s just an A over B and done.”

Well… NO.

There’s a lot to handle:

🔹 Paint out the practical prop’s lighting.

🔹 Match the FX sword to the prop’s position frame by frame.

🔹 Add motion blur to keep up with Scott’s acrobatics.

🔹 Colour correct the fire to match the tone of the plate.

🔹 Add interactive lighting—not just on Scott, but on the lackeys nearby.

🔹 Roto Scott’s limbs and the enemies he interacts with (yes, especially the guy flipping in slow motion).

🔹 Reflect the fire accurately on the floor surface.

It’s a ton of work.

But hey, now I’m literally caught between a sword and a gun. So I’ve got plenty of motivation to finish both projects.

Where do we start? With paint and tracking fixes.

But that’ll be for another episode.

The journey continues…
