ENDA Episode 121→ The time when ENDA was tricked by a tech myth

That’s when I learned a single Blu-ray drive reads both formats flawlessly.

We all fall for technology myths now and then, I still do. But nothing stung quite like when I built my very first Hackintosh.

Most of the process went smoothly…until choosing disk drives.

Convinced a Blu-ray reader was a one-trick pony, I installed two separate drives: one for Blu-rays, one for DVDs. For a while it felt like the perfect setup.

Years later, I was planning a new workstation and consulted a veteran PC builder (the kind who crafts high-end rigs for studios). That’s when I learned a single Blu-ray drive reads both formats flawlessly. Meaning I could’ve saved some bucks by skipping the DVD drive on my Hackintosh.

Yes, I felt like a fool… but it was a wake-up call: tech isn’t always what it seems, and it moves faster than we realize.

As VFX artists, our rigs and peripherals aren’t just gadgets—they’re our lifelines. Building your own PC or upgrading a monitor can mean thousands of dollars and hours of setup. So keep these in mind:

➡️ Research deeply before you buy. Don’t trust hearsay.

➡️ Ask the experts, forums, mentors, or that one friend who’s always tinkering.

➡️ Treat hardware as an investment, not an impulse purchase.

Because when you’re staring at screens all day, a single myth can cost you time, money, and sanity.

Ever been burned by a tech myth or surprised yourself twice in one day?

The journey continues…
