ENDA Episode 02→ The time when the Endless Apprentice learned to let go of the Floppy Disks
I did not even know the existence of YouTube till 2010 when...
I will confess that I was one of the most reluctant people to use new technologies. I remember using Floppy Disks till 2009 (I was 14 at that time), until my teacher refused to accept them anymore and told me to start using a USB drive.
Even so, I always tried to find a way of not learning something new because I was scared of not knowing how to use it or worse: breaking it. All seem complex to me and my secondary school was not exactly the place where they would teach you to use something other than the Office Suite on PCs that still use CRT monitors.
As a side note: I did not even know the existence of YouTube till 2010 when I casually saw one of my uncles using it while he taught me Mathematics. But that’s another story.
The point is that moving from using Floppy Disks was a big step for me, not only for the object itself but what it meant to leave behind: my beginnings with computers and storage devices. Nonetheless, little by little I began to get used to the new USB drives (I ended up losing the first one because of his small size of course), even to the point when I could make the jump to an external hard drive by my first year in college.
What happened with my story with the Floppy Disks? I ended up realizing that changing, didn’t mean necessarily forgetting or destroying completely who you were before, but just letting you advance to the next stage without losing the knowledge you already have.
And that was true because even if I just have 1GB in my USB drive, lots of time being limited to 1.44 Mb made me know the value of every kilobyte and it would be something that I would keep the more I expand my storage capacities until today.
Today I see the Floppy Disks as a good memory and occasionally take me back to certain moments of my beginnings, but then I remember the long path I have come since then and I get excited for all the new things that I can keep learning thanks to those first steps.
What is your story with computer storage?
